Tracheal/Bronchial Tumor
A tracheal/bronchial tumor is any kind of mass that invades and/or externally compresses the airway. This can be caused by a benign tumor or by a cancerous (malignant) tumor. Any mass or compression in or around the airway has potential to cause airway obstruction that could be life threatening.
Signs and symptoms:
- Progressive coughing
- Worsening shortness of breath
- Wheezing
- Hemoptysis (bloody sputum)
Surgical Interventions:
-
Endobronchial electrocautery (laser therapy)
-
Tumor debulking surgery
-
Tracheal/bronchial stent placement
A tracheal or bronchial stent can be placed in order to manage an airway stricture and is usually placed during a bronchoscopy.
